The aspect of Cloud's personality that captures my sympathy the most is how his actions are dominated by Sephiroth, that he sometimes acts wrongly against his will, and is terrified by it. Then we learn from Sephiroth that Cloud never had a past: he was simply a failed experiment, a rejected Sephiroth clone. This, of course, is not true, but you can sense his shame and misery near the end of the game.

That is why I like Cloud. He begins as a smug ex-Soldier, but finds himself at the mercy of Sephiroth's illusions and mind games.

Sephiroth may be my favorite character, but I feel the most sympathy for Cloud.
